Express Entry in Canada offers a fast-tracked pathway for high-skilled professionals to obtain permanent residency, provided they are eligible and score competitively. Eligibility changes depending on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, as well as, if applicable, a nomination provided by a province or territory.

About the Express Entry Program

Administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, or IRCC, Express Entry is Canada’s major way of selecting economic immigrants who will benefit Canada economically as well as contribute to Canada’s labor market. Eligible candidates submit their names in a virtual “pool” where they stay until they receive an Invitation to Apply, or ITA, for permanent resident immigration.

Apart from these, certain Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are correlated with Express Entry so that candidates nominated by a province may include that clearance in their profile—increasing their prospects of receiving an ITA.

Application Process under Express Entry

Establish a virtual Express Entry account and lodge your information within 90 days.
You will be awarded a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score depending on your credentials: education, first official language ability (English or French), work experience, age, job offer, if any, and provincial nomination.
If you are at least eligible, you get in the pool and wait until IRCC releases an ITA during a draw.
After receiving an ITA, you will be required to submit a completed application for permanent resident immigration within 60 days. IRCC attempts to adjudicate most cases within an interval of 6 months after submission.
If you're not selected in a period of 12 months, your profile lapses; you can resubmit a fresh one if you're still qualifying.

Major Predictors of CRS Score

Crucially, your CRS score will be calculated on several core criteria:

Education (Canadian credentials counted)
Official language proficiency (English and/or French)
Skilled work experience
Age
Employment offer from a Canadian employer
Provincial nomination
Other adaptability factors, such as a sibling in Canada or French proficiency

There will be two significant updates by 2025:

No additional special points for work arrangements that came into effect after March 25, 2025, no matter job offer or LMIA. Consequently, the formerly granted 50–200 special points for a job offer are no longer valid.
IRCC will hold category-specific draws with first consideration given to candidates with areas of interest in education, healthcare/social services, skilled trades, and Francophone language skills. Such specialized rounds constitute Canada's economy- and labor-market priorities for 2025.

New Policy Developments & What They Mean for You

Starting August 21, 2025, Express Entry candidates will need to receive medical exams before they apply for permanent resident status, rather than at a later stage during the application.
The 2025-26 Departmental Plan for Canada's government affirms a stepped-up effort for candidates already residing and working in Canada under the category of Canadian Experience Class and category-based rounds of selection.
These changes require you, as a candidate, to adjust your profile (credentials, language proficiency, Canadian experience) to best match IRCC's changing priorities for rapid selection and processing.
